With just three lines and a total of 17 syllables in each haiku and studded with prose poetry, Insomnia is a raw, realistic look at how the pressure of doing it all can bubble up to a breaking point and lead to one of life’s darkest moments.
In May 2021, I hit a breaking point. I had gone 46 days total battling extreme insomnia on top of depression, anxiety, and burnout. Unable to get access to a therapist, I leaned on writing to get me through. In this collection of haiku, studded with prose to form haibun, a beautiful style of Japanese poetry, I share the thoughts and feelings that ran through my mind in the moments leading up to one of my darkest moments. By sharing my story, I hope to help break the stigma around mental health and remind others who are in a dark season that they are not alone.
I am here with you. I see you. I feel you. 🤍
